Our Religion lessons often revolve around liturgical seasons, and very occasionally, around current events.
And the Pope's presence in our country is an Event.
The littles are marveling at the crowds and the regalia, the older ones are actually listening, and we are all talking about whatever Pope Benedict is talking about.
What is he saying to us?
It is an amazing and beautiful thing to see Christ (and the Catholic Church) on the nightly news and in the daily paper. (I remember thinking, when the movie "The Passion" was released, "Wow, Jesus. You're in all the newspapers.")
Raymond Arroyo asked George Bush, "You said that when you looked into Vladimir Putin's eyes, you saw his soul. What do you see when you look into the pope's eyes?" Without hesitating, Bush replied, "God."
Whether he meant it or was "playing to the EWTN crowd" doesn't matter. Sometimes, the truth comes out of unexpected mouths.
